Lexus admits that the Spindle Grille is Polarizing. The Design will evolveThe Lexus RX & RZ are a glimpse into the future.

Lexus will replace its spindle grille by what the brand calls the “spindle physique”. The first models to get the new face are the RX and RZ EV.

We want to keep the spindle shape. “But the spindle was always based on the functionality of what’s going under the hood,” Lexus global designer chief Koichi Sug told Automotive News.

The Lexus CT was the first model to sport a spindle grille. The design was reworked on later vehicles, such as the large version on the RX.

Automotive News was told by Suga that the spindle grille is not liked by many customers in the US. He said that many people think it looks like Darth Vader. This learning is the basis for the new spindle execution. The right balance is essential.”

The elements from the grille are now integrated into the spindle body design. The front of the new RX (below), has recessed sections that run along the nose. Their shape is similar to the mesh at the front.

The Lexus RZ (below) has an entirely different look. The Lexus RZ is an EV, so it doesn’t need a large grille opening. Instead, the inlet is located at the bottom. The black bodywork echos the shape and design of the spindle-grille.

Lexus presented a number of EV concepts in December 2021. Several of them had a different spindle grille. An electric sport car had a narrow opening in the center and larger areas at the edges where the headlights fit. The front of a proposed electric sedan was similar.

Lexus and Toyota will jointly introduce 30 electric vehicles globally by 2030. All premium division offerings in China, Europe and the United States will now be EVs. Lexus will be an entirely electric brand by 2035.
