Bad News for RVers: The Bronco Sport is Not Recommended for Flat Towing

Ford believes that motorhome owners will prefer the standard Bronco to the Sport.

The new Ford Bronco remains a hot topic within the off-road world. The Bronco Sport was also introduced at the time. However, it hasn’t received the same attention as its larger sibling . The open highway behind a large motorhome is one thing that it will not conquer. This is, at the very least, without significant aftermarket modifications.

The Bronco Sport isn’t recommended for flat-towing behind an RV. Motor1.com contacted Ford to get a spokesperson on the matter.

Bad News for RVers: The Bronco Sport is Not Recommended for Flat Towing

Flat towing, for those who are still a little confused, is when you tow a vehicle with all its wheels on the ground. Flat towing is most common with larger RVs. Many adventure travelers don’t want to drag around large vehicles for short trips once they arrive at their camping destination. The #RVlife crowd prefers smaller vehicles, but Ford clearly feels otherwise.

What stops the Bronco Sport being flat-towed? Flat towing any vehicle, even with an automatic transmission in neutral can cause excessive wear to transmissions that may require lubrication by engine-driven pumps. The standard Bronco’s transfer case can be placed in neutral to disconnect all driveline components. This capability is not available on the Bronco Sport. Therefore, some aftermarket lubrication and significant driveline disassembly will be required.

Ford claims it is listening to customers. A recent decision by Bronco executives to include a manual transmission in the Sasquatch Package suggests that they are really listening. Motorhome owners who want a Bronco-style runabout will need to give up the Sport model.
