The restoration process itself took three years.
These videos show the process of auto restoration and are often quite entertaining. Both casual car enthusiasts and serious auto enthusiasts enjoy the process of saving a classic car from certain death. However, FerrariChat is not your typical restoration team. It can be difficult to find parts for an old Chevy. But this video shows a 1984 Ferrari 512 Berlinetta Boxer – a rare Prancing Horse and a 12-cylinder marvel.
very rare is what we mean when we say quite rare . First, the Boxer wasn’t officially imported to the United States. This makes it very scarce in the North American market. It was not available for purchase when it was new. Only over 1,000 512i models were made around the world. This Boxer, despite its rarity, had been outside for many years. Therefore, the restoration project would require more than just new tires and some polishing compound.
You can find a thread for this videomontage at FerrariChat. It’s well worth the effort. Newman, a forum member, is the Boxer’s hero. He lists himself as a professional Ferrari technician from Barrie, Ontario. The photos show that he knows his way around a 512BB. The restoration started in late 2014. As you can see, it took the Ferrari down to its bare shell.
This neglected supercar required bodywork and a new coat of paint. But the true magic happens when Newman disassembles and refurbishes the Ferrari flat-12 engine. Although it appears that the car suffered from being outside, the final result is an amazing Ferrari mill.
The car is actually quite impressive. The FerrariChat thread shows that the Boxer was disassembled in 2003 and the final drive took place earlier this year. Newman is to be credited for taking hundreds of photos during the process. We are so grateful that he did. They serve as not only a timeline but also as a time capsule of an original Berlinetta Boxer. Because there are so few of these cars, having this kind of historical reference is almost as valuable as owning a fully restored supercar. Almost.
