The pickup truck is called “Attainable Adventure” and can accommodate boondock camping for up to two people for as long as two weeks.
Overlanding is becoming more popular. The Hellwig “Attainable Adventure Ford Ranger” is just one of a long list of dirt-ready builds that can take you on a longer stay in the wild. Constructed for SEMA 2019. We assumed that the Attainable Adventure Ford Ranger would be a cheap way to get into overlanding. However, its spec chart and $80,000 as-tested price suggest otherwise.
Hellwig began with a 2019 Ford RangerXLT. This vehicle costs about $35,000 in 4×4 configuration. The Old Steel Fabrication team added an Icon Vehicle Dynamics Phase 5 Suspension System to the vehicle, along with Hellwig’s forged adjustable rear sway bars, and EZ990 rear helper leaves springs. This setup allows for adjustable lift up to 3.5 inches more than stock. Hellwig Ford Ranger comes with Icon Alloys 17 inch wheels wrapped in Falken Wildpeak all terrain tires. The outer diameter is 33.8 inches.
Shelter and additional mounting points are provided by a Tepui HyBox roof tent, a Yakima bed rack and an awning as well as a Tepui HyBox awning. Bushwacker fender flares, Addictive Desert Designs rear bumpers and a Rigid Industries lightbar facing forward are some of the body modifications. The cargo box has a Bedslide drawer that can hold an ARB refrigerator and Trail Kitchen. A Goal Zero Yeti 1400 powerstation with solar panels charges the accessories and keeps them charged. Additional fun and useful additions include fuel cans and a Krazy Beaver shovel. Specialized electric mountain bike are also available.
Hellwig used only off-the-rack components and almost no one-off modifications to build the off-roader. The bed’s custom-fabricated head unit is the exception. Although the 80-pound price tag seems prohibitive, it is a fair price. A Sportsmobile Classic 4×4 Ford van starting at $125,000 and camper attachments for pickups easily running to $20,000, that’s without adding suspension kits or body armor.
If you are looking for an affordable overland build, it is worth searching your local classifieds or copying Nissan’s Destination Frontier. This has a smaller amenities list and only $10,000 worth parts and accessories. The Frontier’s $40,000 price makes it more appealing to weekenders and families who are new to overlanding.
