There are many Porsche 911s with aerodynamic helpers that allow the models to stick to the road, and can even look cool. Today marks the 50th anniversary for Porsche putting spoilers and wings on various series production models. This is the 911 Carrera RS 2.7. The Porsche Museum will host a special exhibition devoted to the car on September 20.
The RS 2.7, which debuted in 1972 was the most powerful of the first-generation models. 911 Available for street use. The body featured a prominent front splitter and wider fenders. It also had a ducktail spoiler. Thicker material was used for the windows and body panels. Also, there was less sound insulation.
A 2.7-liter fuel-injected flat six engine produced 207 horsepower (155 Kilowatts) as well as 188 pound-feet (255 Newton-meters).
There were two upgrade options for the Carrera RS 2.7. The Sport package did not include rear seats, carpet, armrests or a clock. The Touring package cost 254 pounds (115 kg) more but offers all the same amenities.
The German magazine Auto Motor und Sport test drove a Carrera RS 2.7 Sport to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 5.8 seconds. This was the fastest production car to reach that speed in under 6.0 seconds. To reach 62 mph, a Touring model took 6.3 seconds.
The Carrera RS 2.7 was not only the first production Porsche with a spoiler at the rear, but also the beginning of the brand putting different sizes of tires on a model that consumers could choose from. The 15-inch wheels featured 185/70 and 215/60 sizes of rubber at the front and back.
Porsche designed the RS 2.7 to be a homologation specific with 500 units being required for racing in the Group 4 Special GT class. The RS 2.7 was even more popular with 1,580 examples produced. There were 1,308 Touring spec examples, 200 Sports examples, 17 base examples and 55 specially outfitted for racing.
