The second half of 2018 will see the debut.
Finally, we have proof that Land Rover has already begun work on the next generation Defender. The attached batch of spy photographs shows a prototype of this vehicle in snowy conditions. This Range Rover-like vehicle is actually a testbed for the Defender three-door model.
Although these shots don’t show much, we can still see the rear suspension setup and wide trailing arms on the front axle. The mule had half its rear doors but they are unlikely to be seen in the final production vehicle.
The only thing we know so far about the new Defender is that it will serve as the third pillar in the brand’s portfolio and will be built on an aluminum-intensive platform from the Range Rover, and Discovery. British manufacturer will release two wheelbase lengths with two and four doors, as well as a choice between hard and soft tops.
The vehicle will not have the same off-road charm as its predecessor. Instead, it will sport a more modern design. Land Rover hopes the model will appeal to a wider audience. To do this, the company will use its latest all-terrain technology, but also make it soft enough to be a good daily driver.
We don’t have much information about the new Defender’s engine lineup at this time, but we expect to see a variety of diesel and gasoline turbo engines from Ingenium. Rumours suggest that the model will receive a pure electric version with at minimum one electric motor, and a high capacity battery.
The revived off-roader will make its debut at Land Rover’s 70th Anniversary Celebration in second half of 2019. The model will be available worldwide, including the United States, and sales will start in the first months in 2019.
