Trafikverket chose two types of RVs. Semi-integrated designs have a cab from the manufacturer and a living space from the motorhome company. The RV manufacturer is the only one who can create the fully integrated design.
Both designs failed to pass the crash test. Trafikverket said that the semi-integrated RV’s driver would not survive the collision. The body of the semi-integrated layout is actually separate from the chassis. There’s no crash structure, as the panel maker builds the panels out wood.
The vehicles were accelerated against a barrier at 40 mph (64 km/h). Trafikverket calculated that the RVs’ weight meant the crash was comparable to a passenger car traveling at 56 mph (90 km/h).
Trafikverket is now determined to encourage motorhome manufacturers to make safer products. The organization is also discussing with Euro NCAP the possibility of making RV crash testing a more common evaluation.
