It even has a codename: G99.
As the E34, which was a rare model from 1992, wasn’t followed by the E61 until 2007, the M5 Touring models were few and far between. According to a source familiar, BMW may be preparing the third iteration for the large speedy estate. The official unveiling could be two years away as series production is expected to begin in November 2024.
Bimmer forum member , ynguldyn, is a well-known insider at BMW who has proven to be right many times with his predictions regarding unreleased models. The M5 Touring will be the next model to receive the codename “G99”. It will replace the M5 Sedan G90, which is due to go into production in July 2024. Rumours suggest that both body styles will get the plug-in hybrid V8 powertrain of the XM, which features a new twin-turbo (S68) 4.4-liter engine.
The E34’s V6 and E61’s V10 would be complemented by a V8. However, it packs a serious punch. The XM will have a range-topping specification in 2023. It will be able to produce 750 horsepower and 1,000 Newton meters (738 pound-feet), to match the Concept XM. The M5 Touring will be an xDrive-only vehicle, and the power transfer will only occur through an automatic transmission.
The M3 touring has finally been released. This would allow BMW to sell two fully-fledged M wagons for first time. Mercedes and Audi have been doing it for years with their E63 Estate and RS4 / RS6 Avant, so it is high time that their archrivals do the same.
The next-generation 5 Series Sedan will be released in 2023 with gasoline, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains. Also, the fully-electric i5 is planned for release. The zero-emissions model will likely get the Touring treatment, although nothing is confirmed at this time.
