Hyundai Ioniq 5 Earns IIHS Top Security Pick+ Safety Rating

Good job, Hyundai.

Strong customer demand is evident for the Hyundai Ioniq 5, literally around the globe. It was recently updated in Europe with a larger lithium-ion battery pack. The latest news from the electric hatch also shows its high safety standards. American’s Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives the Ioniq 5 the highest safety rating.

The EV is rated Top Safety Pick+ for vehicles manufactured after December 2021. It has decent ratings in all categories. The Ioniq5 passes the most important evaluation, crashworthiness. It also receives a Good rating (highest possible) for all of its key parameters. These parameters include the roof strength, along with the standard front crash test for both the driver and passengers.

IIH reports that the driver’s survival area was relatively intact after the front overlap crash test. The front and side curtain airbags performed well and were deployed to protect his head. The dummy’s feet and legs are also at very low risk. For the passenger side, the ratings were very similar.

The Ioniq 5 was able to avoid a collision with pedestrians at 12 mph and 25 mph. Its crash prevention system also reduced the impact speed by 22 miles. The headlights were evaluated as Good in the Limited and SEL trim levels. The SE received an Acceptable rating (second highest).

Hyundai issued a recall of the Ioniq 5 in May. Automaker Hyundai discovered that the Shifter Control Unit, or SCU, had a software problem. This could cause the vehicle to disengage from the parking mechanism and allow it to roll away from its parked position. Hyundai recommends that the vehicle’s electronic brake be used until Hyundai releases a software update. The software glitch could affect approximately 10,729 Ioniq 5 models, according to estimates.

It is important to remember that all new vehicles receive the latest software directly from the manufacturer.
