Japan offers the Toyota C-HR with either a hybrid 1.8-liter engine or a turbocharged four-cylinder 1.2-liter turbocharged.

The global growth of the compact crossover market is continuing to be strong. The Toyota CHR (Coupe Hi-Rider), will bring a bold look to this niche. Japan will soon see the new model. The little UUV will be available to Europeans and Americans in 2017.

Toyota has four trim levels for the C-HR in Japan. The 1.8-liter hybrid four cylinder is used in the S and G versions. G-T and S-T have a turbocharged 1.2-liter four-cylinder. Toyota does not reveal the powertrain outputs of these powertrains in Europe, however the hybrid produces 120 horsepower (90 kilowatts). Turbocharged models produce 114 horsepower (85 kW). A 2.0-liter four-cylinder naturally aspirated 4-cylinder can be purchased in select European markets. It produces 148 horsepower (110 kW).

However, rumors suggest that only the four-cylinder 2.0-liter may be available. The C-HR, however, would be the only compact CUV with this option if Toyota brought the hybrid.

According to Toyota executives, they want to add a high performance version to their range. This rumor is supported by the racing the C-HR at the Nurburgring 24 Hours. A turbocharged 1.5-liter four cylinder with 178 horsepower (133 kW) was used in the competition version.

All C-HR models in Japan include Toyota Safety Sense P driver assistance suite. Pre-collision brake, lane departure warning and automatic high beams are all included. Radar cruise control is also available. Customers can add blind spot monitoring or rear cross-traffic alarm.

Toyota introduced its C-HR concept during the 2014 Paris Motor Show. subsequently, updated the design for 2015. Original plans were to sell this model in the U.S. as a Scion. After the brand’s death, it became a Toyota in the United States. The CUV will join a strong competition, including the Honda and Nissan Juke.
