Concept We Forgot 2001 Dodge Super8 Hemi

The Super8 Hemi is a retro-inspired concept with a modern twist. It proposes a bizarre design to reimagine the family sedan.

Name:Dodge Super8 Hemi

First appearance:2001 North American International Auto Show, (NAIAS), Detroit

Specifics:5.7-liter V8 with 353 horsepower and 395 lb.ft, four speed automatic gearbox, rear wheel drive, independent suspension. 0-60 mph is less than 6 seconds. Top speed of 154 mph.

Why It Matters Now:

Although it may be difficult to see, the unusual shape of the body emits a 1950s vibe that makes it worthwhile.

Dodge, during the DaimlerChrysler era had an idea to reinvent the rear-wheel-drive sedan. He proposed some unusual design cues that included reversed A-pillars as well as a wraparound windshield. It stood out from other sedans of the early 2000s by its lack of B-pillars, sloped roofline and absence of A-pillars.

These suicide doors opened to reveal a similarly interesting cabin. They also have a retro feel that evokes classic cabins. The buttons were used to control the four-speed auto, and the air vents were shaped like a jet engine. A steering wheel made of wood and plastic with an aluminium frame gave it a unique flair.

The Super8 Hemi’s generous wheelbase of 117.4 inches (almost 3 meters) was spacious. It was also loaded with technology. The center console contained an Infotronic infotainment system. Those seated in the back had access to two tablets with an Internet connection.

It was undoubtedly a bold car with some strong internals. The concept was powered by a 5.7-liter Hemi Hemi V8 engine. It produced 353 horsepower (263 kilowatts), and 395 pound feet (536 Newton-meters). This allowed it to reach 60 mph (61.6 kph) in just six seconds. At its maximum speed, the car can go up to 154 mph (248 km/h).

Although the Dodge Super8 Hemi was not produced, it served as a prototype for the second-generation Chrysler 300.

Here are three of the most recent concepts in the series: Volvo LCP2000, Lotus Emotion and Mercobra Roadster.
