Volvo’s semi-truck with 2,400 horsepower and S60 Polestar racecar go head-tohead

Two challenges are presented and each one has very close results.

Volvo Trucks is a separate company from Volvo Cars, but they have a friendly relationship. They can still race against one another occasionally, but their jovial nature doesn’t stop them from sharing some of their racing instincts. Volvo Trucks’ latest stunt saw it challenge its 2,400-horsepower (1.790-kilowatt), big rig, The Iron Knight, against a S60 Polestar TC1 at the World Touring Car Championship.

The Iron Knight is a semi-truck that’s known for its speed. The engine’s quad-turbo six cylinder diesel engine of 12.8-liter capacity produces an incredible 4,425 pound-feet (5.993 Newton-meters). This beast has enough power to run record times for 500- and 1000-meter sprints (1,640- and 3281 feet), respectively.

The S60 Polestar TC1 has a more traditional design but is still very wild. It is powered by a 1.6-liter version from Volvo’s Drive E engine family. The powerplant generates 400 horsepower (298 kW) through a six speed sequential gearbox.

Volvo Trucks begins by pitting the two teams against each other in a drag race that lasts a quarter mile (402 meters). A wet course is another consideration to take into account before placing your bets on a winner. It’s a tight finish, even without spoiling the outcome.

Volvo Trucks allows The Iron Knight (and the S60 Polestar) to race around Sweden’s Mantorp Park circuit after they have proven their acceleration. Volvo Trucks gives its product an advantage to ensure a close race. Instead of letting them race head-to-head, The Iron Knight has a long lead before the touring car can begin the chase. You can see the video to see if the artificial lead allows the truck to take the checkered flag.
