VW Teases a 'Notably Fast Transportationer' that will debut in February

This is a different type of NFT. Is it?

Volkswagen released a teaser video on Friday. It raises many questions. The teaser image shows the silhouette, hidden in shadow of a VW Golf. This isn’t all that mysterious. VW captioned the image with an interesting caption: “We are launching an NFT” Coming February 2022. It is a curt image and very difficult to decipher.

NFTs (non-fungible tokens) have seen a surge in popularity since 2021. It looks like this tech will continue to be a hot topic in 2022. It’s unclear if VW will offer NFTs or if they are trying to capitalize upon their popularity to launch a real-world product.

Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia launched a range of Arteon NFTs this month. Perhaps the company is looking to expand its NFT efforts into new markets. It’s not surprising that NFTs are leaking into the tech-obsessed auto industry. Lamborghini has teased something NFT-related since November. However, the project is still at its hype phase. Nissan Canada launched an NFT for a Nissan GT-R in September. The auction will include a real, live GT-R Nismo Special Edition.

We hope Volkswagen will drop a few more teasers before the February debut to explain what we can expect. One possibility is a new VW Golf variant, possibly called the GTI TCR. The company may have another trick in its backside. The GTI, Golf R could use a friend.

It would be a strange thing if VW launched an NFT. While automakers are already looking to the future with EVs and autonomous vehicles and digitized services in the future, NFTs are still very much in their infancy. Therefore, how we use them now might not be the same as how we will use them in the future. Many companies are already looking into subscriptions for different vehicle functions and may also be implementing them.
