Corvair Off-Roader Saves the Day by Restoring High-End RVs

The Corvair of all your dreams is here.

Although we’ve seen many off-road rescues (including one that involved an upside down Ford Bronco Sport), most involve releasing smaller vehicles. The latest video features a Zephyr RV which was swept away by the sand. To rescue the large rig, the rescue team used a heavily modified Corvair (code-named Morrvair) and a winch truck.

The off-road Corvair wagon is clearly the main attraction. The current Corvair Lakewood Wagon was originally a 1961 Corvair Lakewood Wagon. Other than the body shell which has been thoroughly rust-repaired, there is very little that the vehicle shares with the original. The power source is a front-mounted 5.3-liter Chevrolet LSV8 engine, which transmits its power to all four wheels via a three-speed auto transmission.

Towing was not possible until one of the Matt’s Off-Road Recovery employees crawled underneath the RV in order to attach the tow-straps. One rope was attached to the Corvair and the other to the winch truck.

The elastic rope allowed the Corvair to pull the RV to safety in short bursts. The big rig’s rear-wheel steering system was out of sync with its front wheels, making rescue difficult. According to the owner, it disengages at 15 mph.

Matt is also a tow businessman and has taken his Morrvair anywhere Matt wants, from Moab’s Easter Jeep Safari, Utah to the deep sands of Zion National Park. It’s easy to see that this machine is built like a tank. We have written more about the Morrvair in an earlier article .
