Sony Mobility, a newly formed company, will investigate a possible entry into the EV market.

Sony has a lot to show at CES 2022 in Las Vegas, from new OLED TVs and a virtual reality headset. You’re not reading Motor1.com, so you probably don’t care about them. Vision-S 02 is a fully-electric concept that will be a companion to the Vision_S 01 sedan, which was unveiled at the same event in 2020.

The original concept was designed with four seats. However, the SUV can accommodate seven people. The SUV is essentially a sedan-like vehicle with dimensions of 192.7 inches (4.9m), 76 inches (1.93m) wide and 65 inches (1.65m) high. It also has a generous wheelbase of 119.3 inches (3.03m). It weighs in at 5,467 lbs (2,480 kg) and rides on 20-inch wheels.

Two electric motors drive the Sony Vision-S 02’s all-wheel drive. One is mounted on the front axle, the other drives the rear wheels. To mirror the sedan, each produces 268 horsepower (200kilowatts). The acceleration numbers are not known, but sprinting to 62 mph (100 km/h), which takes 4.8 seconds, is likely to take more than that required by the Vision-S 01 because it weighs 287 pounds (130 kg) less. The sedan’s top speed is 112 mph (181 km/h), while the sedan is at 37 mph (60 km/h).

Both vehicles share hardware similarities beyond electric motors. They have identical length and wheelbases, with the SUV being slightly wider and taller. Both have an air suspension. However, the newer model has a wider ground clearance of 6.2 inches (15.7 cms) and the sedan has nearly an inch more.

Since the debut of the Vision-S 01 at CES 2020 Sony has repeatedly denied any plans to enter the automotive industry. Guess what? The Japanese tech giant will start a new company, Sony Mobility, this spring. “Through which we intend to explore entry in the EV market,” said Sony Mobility.
