Volkswagen of America informed the EPA that at least 85,000 cars with the V6 3.0 TDI engines have illegal software designed to manipulate CO2 emissions testing results. VoA was accused by the Environmental Protection Agency of installing a defeat mechanism in its V6 3.0 TDI engine at the beginning. Now, the Volkswagen Group has confirmed that this is true. There are over 85,000 vehicles with the rigged diesel engines installed on large Audi, Porsche and Volkswagen models from 2009 to 2016.

Jeri Ward from Audi of America, communications chief, said that the illegal software was different to the one used on 482,000 vehicles with 2.0 TDI engines sold by VoA. Volkswagen has admitted that they sold approximately 11 million cars worldwide equipped with a defeat device to work with the 1.2 TDI and 1.6 TDI engines. The number of diesel cars equipped with special software has increased to at least 85,000 units. These “new entries” include many models, such as the Porsche Cayenne and Volkswagen Touareg. Recall that Volkswagen UK stated towards the end September that V6 3.0 TDI cars were legitimate. This will be confirmed by ongoing investigations in Europe.
