This engine has more torque and better efficiency.
The VW Tiguan is equipped with a brand new engine for the 2018 model-year. Or at least, it’s kind of new. The Tiguan SUV will be available in dealerships this summer with a 2.0-liter TSI four cylinder engine. This is basically an updated version VW Group’s EA888.
The EA888 was first introduced in the CC sedan in 2009. It signified VW’s move to smaller and more efficient powertrains. It will be used in the Tiguan to continue the efficient theme. The EA888 introduces all-new aluminum alloy pistons, cylinder heads and valve springs to the cast iron block.
Although the EPA has not yet provided final MPG estimates for the engine, VW claims that the 2.0-liter TSI engine will provide “improved efficiency” and a 20% increase in maximum torque. Peak torque is 221 lbft (299 Newton-meters), while peak horsepower is just 184 (137kilowatts).

The horsepower of the 2017 model is 16 less than that of the previous model. However, torque is significantly up by 14 lb-ft (207vs 221). Although MPG figures for 2018 are not yet available, VW promises an improvement over the 2017 model’s 20-city/24 highway MPG. Spy shots indicate that we might be able to see a Tiguan R with 300 horsepower (223 kW).
The new 2.0-liter TSI engine is the only engine that will be available in the Tiguan for now. VW promises that the powertrain’s updated version will be available in the remaining models of the lineup.
