Toyota GR Sports Car Range Revealed, But Supra Is A No-Show
But there is a Prius… Actually, two.

These rumors are true. The rumors were true. Toyota has launched a new range of sports cars. But don’t let your hopes get too high. Today’s announcement in Japan of the “GR” series will bring about a three-tiered system for Toyota’s sporty offerings. The top model will be the “GRMN”, followed by the mid-level “GR Sport” and then the “GR Sport” models. Regular owners will also have the option to add “GR Parts to their cars.

All models, from the small Vitz / Yaris to Harrier SUV, have been dressed in GR attire. The 86 coupe is the most suitable candidate for the GR treatment. It now has some aerodynamic body parts and Sachs shock absorbers. A Torsen limited slip differential and strong brake calipers make it a great choice. Recaro seats and forged aluminum wheels are included, as well as a smaller steering column.

The Vitz GRMN is the hottest, and it is equipped with a supercharged 1.8 liter gasoline engine that produces 209 horsepower (156 kilowatts), and 184 pound feet (250 Newton-meters). The hatchback, which will be available in Japan in spring 2018, can sprint to 62 mph (101.0 kph) within 6.3 seconds. It also tops out at 143 miles per hour (230 km/h). Toyota has added LSD and BBS-forged aluminum wheels to distinguish it from the standard Vitz. It also features sporty seats that provide better lateral support and a smaller steering wheel.

Japan will be the first to receive the GR models, while other parts of the world will follow suit. Toyota will open a series “GR Garage” shops that will serve as regional bases for Toyota Gazoo Racing. From these shops, owners can order performance parts. They will replace the ones that are already in Japan under “Area 86”.

There is no word yet on the Supra redesign, but it will certainly be a top-of-the-range product once it comes out next year or in 2019.
