2018 Jeep Wrangler: Check Out The Changes Side by Side

2018 Jeep Wrangler: Check Out The Changes Side by SideAlthough it still looks like a Jeep but with several design improvements, it is now more modern.

We are finally able to see how Jeep has redesigned the iconic Wrangler for this new generation. It is not surprising that Jeep designers did not depart from the Wrangler’s traditional shape. The design has undergone major changes that modernize the SUV. In fact, the JK generation of the Wrangler was introduced in 2006.

Jeep is only showing us a few photos at the moment. We’ll need to wait until November 29 at the Los Angeles Auto Show for a better view of the 2018 Jeep Wrangler. This is the new off-roader’s performance against its predecessor.

A Jeep wouldn’t be complete without a seven-slot grille. The 2018 Jeep Wrangler keeps that tradition up front. It’s been reworked to make room for the large, circular headlights. The headlights are now a new look with what appears to be ring-like elements at the edges that could serve as running lights. The new horizontal turn signals and running lights are mounted to the frontfenders. They replace the original Wrangler’s stuck-on circular marker lights. This might also make it more difficult for the aftermarket, to replace those frontfenders at will.

The Jeep’s front ends have had their final lighting changes. Here, the fog lights are integrated more seamlessly into the bumper. This bumper is also more aerodynamically swept at each edge. However, this doesn’t mean that function has been lost. There are still two recovery hooks visible from the bumper.

The Jeep’s windshield is shorter and lower than it was before. This will increase aerodynamic efficiency. Lower panels that meet the windshield and front fenders are cleaner, and have fewer bolt heads. We’ll be addressing this windshield frame in more detail later.

This angle also shows a new character line that runs from the side-view mirror to the bottom of the windows. It adds a lot of visual interest to the old Wrangler’s plain body sides. Traditional touches are still present: exposed hinges, an old-fashioned mechanical door lock protruding out of the sheet metal, as well as chunky black-plastic handles.

Jeep enthusiasts are excited about this shot: The windshield folds down! Although it was possible to fold down the windshield on the Wrangler’s predecessor, this took a lot of effort due to the fact that the windshield frame also formed the A-pillars for the SUV. The windshield can be lowered easily, which Jeep calls “convenient”, because the Apillars are still in place even when the windshield is down.

The 2018 Jeep Wrangler is very similar in other aspects to its predecessor. The 2018 Jeep Wrangler has a new fender vent, the rear bumper is slightly rounder, and the Cpillar curves more gracefully as it connects to the Jeep’s roof rail. Other design cues remain, such as the exposed gas cap and external taillights.

Jeep has not yet posted any interior photos, although spy photographers have given us an excellent look. However, we can see from this photo that there are traditional handbrakes, traditional lever-style transfers selectors, and a manual transmission. Hooray! You can expect a lot more interior electronics upgrades based on spy photos. These include the Uconnect infotainment systems and the redesigned center-stack control. However, purists are still sceptical that the center-stack-mounted vertical power window switches will be retained.

Although we don’t have a photo of the outgoing Wrangler, it is clear from a drone-eye view that the Wrangler’s new hood will be receiving some minor styling. External latches and rubber stops for lowering the windshield will be maintained. However, it seems that the hood now has new strakes to add design interest. Vents may also be available depending on the trim level.

What other information do you have?

These photos confirm that we will see both a Wrangler with a 2-door and the more popular 4-door Unlimited model in this new generation. Jeep claims the model will feature “improved aerodynamics” as well as “dozens of door, top and windshield combinations.”

Rumours suggest that the Wrangler will have a 3.6-liter V6 engine and a turbocharged, 2.0-liter four-cylinder. The Jeep could offer a powered softtop and more than 200 accessories from dealers. We will eventually get a Wrangler Pickup directly from the manufacturer.

When will we learn more?
