The Australian division will put the “luxury” in “Hilux.”
Toyota’s Thailand branch was quick to give the Hilux a mild refresh back last November. It seems that at least one other country will soon receive an updated version. The automaker’s Australian division announced plans to update the pickup truck later in the year. It will be a luxurious version with a double-cab body.
This decision is logical when you consider that the Hilux family’s current top trim is also the most sought-after. Toyota hopes to capitalize on the increased demand for high-priced pickups by offering more luxury and other goodies.
Toyota’s new fancier Hilux will be Toyota’s answer to the VW Amarok versions in higher-spec and the newcomer in this segment, the Mercedes X-Class. The world’s first premium pickup truck.
The refreshed Hilux will receive “substantial updates”, but don’t expect to see a TRD version. Why? Why?
The Hilux family has received an update to the Thailand market that includes a rugged Rocco trim. However, it is too early to know if other countries will receive this new member. Toyota Through its Australian division, it did play with the idea for a more capable Hilux with the Tonka design pictured below.
To celebrate the success of the pickup truck, it received a larger ground clearance, heavy duty suspension, high-riding axle and chunky offroad tires. The Hilux Tonka will not be produced, but some of its accessories may be made available to the road-going model.
