Mercedes-Benz introduces new AMG-developed 5.5 liter V8

The 2012 SLK 55AMG will feature the engine’s debut. It has a standard output power of 310 kW (416 HP / 422 PS) with 540 Nm torque.

Mercedes-Benz announced the release of the AMG-developed, naturally-aspirated V8 engine with a 5.5-liter capacity.

The M152 unit has a power output of 310kW (416 BHP / 422 PS) with 540 Nm (398 Lb-ft of torque). It will be first introduced in the 2012 AMG.

The engine is built on the M157 unit, a 5.5 liter twin-turbo V8 that the automaker released last year. Both engines have the same displacement (bore/stroke). The M152 is 30% more fuel-efficient than the previous unit. It consumes 8.5 liters/100km in the SLK55 AMG.

AMG Cylinder Management, a new feature that reduces the V8 to a 4-cylinder engine with a healthy 230 Nm (180 lb-ft) of torque, is responsible for this low fuel-economy rating.

The Mercedes-Benz SLK 55AMG 2012 with the new power unit will be unveiled at the Frankfurt motor show in September
