Mazda confirms next CX-5 with Straight-Six Engine and New Platform

Now the question is: When?

The next-generation Mazda CX-5 has received much attention. A major overhaul is in order for the Japanese marque’s best-selling model. An prototype was captured testing stateside in May.

The most important news about the next generation of the crossover is the fact that it will sit on a new platform, and be powered by an inline six engine. Vinesh Bhindi, Mazda Australia’s Managing Director, has confirmed both through a presentation to journalists.

“Mazda continues investing in high-efficiency burning engines, with SkyActivX and the new generation straightsix engine family which will power our new large-platform products that is CX-5 or higher,” Bhindi stated in a presentation to journalists. This was reported by Australia’s car sales.

Although the confirmation has been made, there is not much information available about the straight-six engines and the platform. An early report stated that the automaker would begin the production in 2022 of rear-wheel drive inline-six vehicles. Hybrid models are being considered, and diesel is expected to remain. The Mazda6 sedan will also include a rear-wheel/all wheel drivetrain.

However, none of these speculations has been confirmed and the exact date of the next CX-5’s release is still unknown. Other large Mazda vehicles will also be updated, and will use the new platform.

Mazda will likely prioritize the CX-5 for development, but that’s just what we think. This model is the moneymaker for Mazda, having sold 361,051 units in 2020, despite the year being plagued by pandemics. It would make business sense to update the most beloved model.
