The model is “on-the-start blocks for Europe.”
We last discussed Volkswagen’s plans to suspend the U.S.-spec Passat production for two weeks in spring. Today we have new details about the European counterpart. A redesigned version, the Euro-spec Passat has been announced by the Wolfsburg-based manufacturer. It will be available on the market in the near future.
Dr. Herbert Diess (Chairman of Volkswagen Brand) revealed that the facelifted Passat was almost ready for dealerships on the Old continent during his speech at the annual Volkswagen Media Conference. He didn’t reveal any other details.
“The European launch of the redesigned Passat is underway. The Passat will be available in Variant and Hybrid models, as usual.
The European version of the model, unlike the U.S. Passat is built on the modular MQB platform. According to European nomenclature, the eight-generation D-segment vehicle was launched in November 2014. It is “a premium car without a premium price.”
The current engine range includes three gasoline motors and three diesel engines, each with a turbocharger, depending on which market they are in. The power ranges from 118 horsepower (88 kilowatts), for the entry-level 1.6 TDI, to 276 hp (206 kW) for 2.0 TSI. A GTE hybrid version uses a 1.4-liter gasoline engine and a compact, 115-hp electric motor.
While you shouldn’t expect any major changes in this area, it is possible to see some improvements in the CO2 and fuel consumption numbers. To replace the aging 1.4 TSI, Volkswagen could add the 1.5-liter TSI to its lineup.
With more than 180,000 deliveries in Europe last year, the Passat remains at the top of Europe’s D segment. Followed by Opel Insignia and Ford Mondeo, Renault Talisman, Skoda Superb and Opel Insignia.
