Three turbos are not enough
We’ve been asking ourselves this question since the launch of the new BMW M550dxDrive. The current vehicle boasts the most powerful six-cylinder diesel available, a 3.0-liter Inline-Six unit with not just two but three turbochargers. The motor gives the 5Series serious power. It produces 400 horsepower (294 Kilowatts) at 4,400 RPM and has a huge peak torque of 560 poundfeet (760 Newton-meters). This motor can be started from 2,000 RPM.
What is the speed of the new M550d?
It’s fast on paper. It feels faster in reality. The YouTube channel AutoTopNL has a new video that shows the acceleration and top speed performance. It is also compared to its predecessor, M550d.
Both cars use the same engine but the newer version has a turbocharger. Although it may sound like a small improvement, the M550d has a significant advantage in acceleration between 0-62 and 100 mph. The 2018 model takes 4.4 seconds to switch Sport mode with launch control activated. The previous model took 0.3 seconds.
It’s almost the same speed. It takes the 400-hp model 35 seconds to reach its maximum speed of 161 mph (226 kph). The tri-turbo 381hp version takes just a few seconds longer and has its electronic limiter set at 155mph (250 km/h).
The new M550d is now available:
The M550 has an xDrive AWD system that is mated with an eight-speed automatic gearbox. BMW claims that the sedan consumes 5.9 liters of fuel per 100 km, which is approximately 40 miles per gallon. However, you will need to travel at speeds far below those shown in the video.
