Toyota launched the “GR” sports car range last September. This allowed Japanese customers to purchase a sleek-looking Prius or an upgraded minivan. There are three levels to the lineup: the entry-level GR Sport, mid-range GR and the flagship GRMN. For now, the GRMN subfamily’s only member is the supercharged Yaris. The reborn Supra will likely get the “Gazoo Race Masters of Nurburgring” treatment.
It is anticipated that the “GR” series will expand to include a hot version of the Corolla Hatchback a.k.a. Auris based on your location. A senior executive at Toyota Australia, Motoring was interested in the idea of a hot hatch to compete with the Ford Focus ST or the Volkswagen Golf GTI. Sean Hanley, vice president of sales and marketing was asked by the magazine if he believed that a Corolla with a higher performance would succeed down under.
A Toyota representative stated that it is a matter of “when, not if” a member from the new Gazoo racing sub-brand will be arriving in Australia. Although the Yaris GRMN mentioned isn’t one of them they are thinking of “a really beautiful Corolla or another type of car” Hanley suggested that it could arrive in Australia within three years.
“I would love to see it as soon and as soon as possible, but I wouldn’t rule any possibility of something happening in the next three-years under the Gazoo racing brand.”
It is worth noting that he was only referring to an Australian launch. Other markets may be able to get the model sooner. The hot hatch, if it is approved for production, will likely have more power than the Yaris with its 209 horsepower (250 Newton-meters), and 184 pounds of torque. Although GR is less powerful than GRMN, the Auris belongs in the top segment and requires more power to compete with the bigger names in its category. The GR would include an upgraded engine as well as a sportier body kit and stiffer suspension. It also has larger brakes and a modified chassis.
