Toyota built a strong car for the MR2 driver, and that is why he’s grateful.
We are pleased to report that the driver of the Toyota MR2 escaped the accident with only minor injuries. He left the hospital with only minor injuries, and was able tell the story of what happened Monday on I-95.
Scott Shepherd tried to steer his 2001 Toyota MR2 around a bucket that had fallen from a pickup truck bed. He was actually cut off by the utilitarian vehicle and the obstacle appeared on his road. The driver had to resort to evasive measures. The worst was actually the worst. Scott lost control of his sports car with mid-engine and crashed into a semi truck.
The tiny two-seater sustained structural damage upon impact. Scott was trapped in his seat by the fabric top, which fell on him. He was able to use his shoe to cut through the roof and eventually emerged from the wreckage unscathed. To clear the path, he had to bend the roof’s frame.
Some would argue that it was luck that he survived without serious injuries. However, the driver of the MR2 said his appreciation to Toyota and added “I shouldn’t be here right this moment.”
This unfortunate accident is a reminder of the safety improvements made by automakers over the past three generations. It will only get better over the coming decades. After three generations of the beloved MR2, Toyota discontinued the model in 2007. However, it has been hinting at a possible return between the 86 & the revived Supra.
