A recall on certain BMW vehicles is being conducted in the USA due to fire risk. This affects more than 900,000. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), has announced this in campaign number 22V119.

This massive recall is caused by a Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve heater (blowby-heater) that was defective. BMW claims that the component might not have been manufactured according to manufacturer specifications. This could cause the PCV’s overheating by a short circuit. This could increase the fire risk.
This component was manufactured by Mahle International GmbH, Germany.
The recall affects approximately 917,106 vehicles, with just one percent of them being affected by the defect. Bloomberg reports however that the recall affects 98,000 vehicles in Canada, and 18,000 in South Korea. This information was provided by a spokesperson for BMW.
BMW issued a recall in 2017 involving 1.4million vehicles because of a similar problem with similar risks. This was part of NHTSA’s 17V-683 recall campaign.
NHTSA’s 2019 recall campaign number 19V-273 included another set of 2006 model year 3er, 5er and Z4.
It’s difficult to determine if your BMW is affected by these recalls if the VIN number has not been included in NHTSA campaign reports. You might check with your dealer if you suspect that your Bimmer is affected by the recall.
BMW already informed dealers about the recall. By April 25, 2022, the company will notify owners as well.
