Say hello to the Prangler.
Very few people have the opportunity to see the dark world of automakers. We are occasionally privy to the wonderful mysteries of test mules, which extends beyond the camouflaged prototypes we showcase here. The Prangler is a case in point, and it’s not misspelled. It’s a bizarre combination of a Jeep Wrangler with a Plymouth Prowler, which was actually a Chrysler product back in 1990.
Online, the Prangler story is occasionally mentioned. The Drive This test mule is a reminder of how bizarre he was. Many have been disappointed by the passing of time. Pranglers, yes, there were many, were created to speed up the testing process and disguise the Prowler’s production sheet metal.
The very old YouTube video at the beginning of this article shows that the Prangler was essentially a Prowler with a Jeep Wrangler greenhouse. Prowler is the wheelbase, and the powertrain is Prowler. However, instead of being confined to a roofless roadster, engineers and test drivers had the advantage of a fully enclosed cockpit that allowed them to enjoy comfort and store their testing gear. Although the Prowler had a soft top and windows, it was not very spacious as shown in the photos.
