The Florida Toll Road Bandit is a charming name.
Although toll roads can be a hassle, at least all those who use them pay their fair share. Well, almost everyone. A Florida driver driving a burgundy Chrysler Pacifica van was caught cheating the system in order to avoid paying tolls. A couple captured the video from another vehicle and shows the motorized black cover covering the license plate as it passes through toll stations. After the driver has cleared the cameras, the black cover will be lifted and the license plate is revealed once more.
Sammy and Mayte, the couple who captured the video, shared it with CBS4 News in Miami. They then shared the video to the Florida Highway Patrol.
It’s unfair. Sammy stated in an interview with CBS4 News that we all must pay tolls. “That’s why the Sunpass exists, so everyone who uses the highways has to pay tolls.”
Trooper Joe Sanchez remarked on the video, “Wow. Incredible. “They’re getting very inventive.” He said that the Florida Highway Patrol had never seen anything like it before.
Online shopping is a great way to find license plate covers. They are typically made with a roll-up cover that is attached to a license plate frame. The driver can adjust the height and position of the cover remotely. Sanchez advises drivers against investing in such a device. According to CBS4 News, the minimum penalty for obscured license plates in Florida is $179.
It is not known if this driver has been arrested. The police have his license plate number so it is only a matter time before he is arrested. Sanchez points out that the Florida Department of Transportation has the ability to identify offenders and pursue owners for past debts. He could be liable for thousands of dollars in unpaid fees if he has been driving the Pacifica plate for a while.
