The wheelbase of the 86 will be shorter than that of the 86.
The resurrected Toyota Supra was seen in action last week at 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed. Here, the chief engineer of the sports car revealed some details about the forthcoming coupe. Tetsuya TADA strongly suggested that the model codenamed “A90”, will weigh in at around 1,500 kilograms (3.306 pounds).
He said, “It’s about 200 – 300kg [440 – 661 lbs] lighter that the F-Series.” The Lexus GS F is 1,829 kg (4.034 lbs), while the RC F is 1,795 kg (3.958 lbs). Tada’s statement is not surprising considering that a February report by Japan’s Best Car magazine stated that the new Supra would be 1,496 kg (3.298 lbs).
Whatever the car’s final weight, Tada stated in an interview that it would evenly distribute its weight front to rear in an ideal 50/50 ratio. The Supra, a two-seater Supra, will be shorter than the 86’s (101.2 inches/2.57 meters).
Tada stated that the new Supra’s engine will produce about the same power as the F Series cars from Lexus. The GS F and RC F are powered by a naturally-aspirated 5.0-liter V8 engine that produces 467 horsepower and 389 pound feet (527 Newton-meters) respectively. The Supra will use a turbocharged six-cylinder engine from BMW to produce an output “on par with that of the F-Series Lexus.”
Autocar believes that Tada meant the torque number and not the horsepower. The Best Car report mentioned that the engine produced 335 horsepower and was channeled to rear axle via an eight-speed automatic transmission with a limited slip differential.
Toyota will finally! The Supra will be revealed in its full production form in the first quarter of 2019, before it hits the assembly line at Magna Steyr’s factory in Graz in Austria. There, the platform-sharing BMW Z4 is also scheduled to arrive in spring 2019. The Supra will also be headed to NASCAR in 2019 to replace the Camry.
