Ford Mondeo Wagon Facelift Reveals What We Already Know

This is a likely prototype for a diesel engine, judging by the twin exhausts located under the rear bumper.

The fourth-generation Ford Mondeo, which is the European counterpart to the Fusion continues to be developed. Another prototype was spotted being tested in the Austrian Alps. This is a test car for a station wagon, most likely a diesel with some camouflage to conceal some visual changes we already know about.

The Mondeo wagon is being sold by Ford in the United Kingdom and Germany with a modified rear end. It features a new chrome trim on the boot lid and new graphics at the taillights. This is the exact same change that the prototype is hiding behind the disguise. It’s strange to see Ford trying not to sell something that’s already available in secret.

However, there are more important changes that should be hidden beneath the familiar skin. Although nothing is certain, Ford may replace the 2.0-liter Peugeot-sourced diesel engines with its 2.0-liter EcoBlue diesel. This is an in-factory innovation. It is compatible with Ford’s brand-new eight-speed automatic transmission type torque converter. This internal development was also made.

The new 1.5-liter three cylinder EcoBoost gasoline engine will be available. It features a cylinder activation system. It is already available in the Focus as well as the FiestaST. This engine is small turbocharged and direct injection.

Recent reports indicated that Ford may change its model strategy for the European market. However, it is still too early to know if the C-Max and Galaxy, Mondeo and S-Max will be retired in favour of more SUVs and crossover vehicles.

Contrary to what this suggests, executives at Ford have suggested that a new generation Mondeo could be possible. Ford’s smart modular architecture should be used, but little else is known.
