It is reminiscent of an AMG GT Roadster.
It’s easy to be confused by all the AMG GT models Mercedes offers. This will only get worse next year. You can currently buy a GT Coupe, Roadster, GT C Coupe or Roadster as well as a GT S Coupe and GT R Coupe. New spy photos suggest that Mercedes plans to add the GT R Roadster to its GT lineup. We don’t want to forget about the rumored GT R Black Series.
This is the first time we have seen the AMG GT R Roadster. It looks exactly like the GT R coupe, but it has a convertible roof and fixed wings. The Coupe comes with a retractable wings. Everything else is exactly as you would expect from AMG. The GT R Roadster’s body is large, wide, and aggressive with a valance and rear fascia, as well as big, beefy tires that are tucked under the wheel wells.
The same twin-turbocharged, 4.0-liter V8 should power the engine. It should generate 585 horsepower and 516 pounds-feet (706 Newton-meters), of torque. This allows it to reach speeds of 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 3.6 seconds. The Roadster should do the same.
Mercedes will soon release the GT R Roadster’s details, but we won’t be able to know much. We don’t think it will change the AMG GT platform formula in any significant way. Mercedes sees the GT as a response to the Porsche 911, a platform and nameplate that allows the automaker to make a variety of variants at different price points. This wide variety of options and prices allows Mercedes to make some profit on the more expensive versions, while still offering supercar enthusiasts something they can afford.
The production of the GT started in 2014 for the 2015 model-year. Since then, the automaker slowly increased the range. The GT R Roadster is the next model that the automaker will need in its lineup after the GT R Black Series. Maybe we’ll also see the GT R Roadster Black Series. The GT R Roadster will be available for purchase sometime in the next year.
