Wild Rumor: Next Honda Civic Type R will have AWD and 400 HP

There is no consensus on the rumors.

Honda may have tried to mislead people about the next-generation CivicType R. There have been many rumors about the next-generation Honda Civic Type R over the past year. They range from Honda making it all-electric to Honda adding no electrification to the hot hatch. According to the latest web rumor, it will be a hybrid. .

BestCarWeb.jp reports that the next-gen Type R will boast nearly 400 horsepower (298kilowatts) and all-wheel-drive. According to the publication Honda will pair Type R’s turbocharged 2.0 liter four-cylinder engine, with two electric motors. Similar to the NSX’s powertrain configuration, it will be reversed in Civic. The gas engine will power front wheels, while the two electric motors the rear.

This latest speculation is contrary to rumors that were circulated last month that indicated that the Japanese automaker would keep its next-generation Type R solely gas-powered. It’s not easy to pinpoint Honda’s plans for its hot hatch.

Interview last month Honda Europe’s Senior Vice President stated that “no decisions have yet been made on this,” but did not provide any concrete answers as to what Honda is doing.

The Type R’s 2.0-liter turbocharged engine makes 306 horsepower (228 Kilowatts) and 295 pounds-feet (405 Newton-meters) torque. This is enough for the hatch at 3,100 lbs (1,406 kilogram). The Type R would be a totally different beast behind the wheel if it had 100 horsepower (74 kW). Only available with a 6-speed manual gearbox.

Until Honda provides more information, we won’t be able to know what Honda plans with the Type R. The internet will continue to speculate about Honda’s next steps after the Type R arrives. We bet Honda loves it that way. Honda is not expected to release anything significant in the near future, but the next-generation Civic Type R will be available for the 2022 model years.
