The US has stuck with a petrol-powered Tiguan. However, increasing demand for diesel engines may force Volkswagen to offer a TDI version.
John Ryan, the VW product planner, said that the model was being considered but there are a few stumbling blocks. To meet U.S. emission standards, the 2.0-liter TDI engine – which is available in the Golf TDI or Jetta TDI – would need to be fitted with an expensive urea based catalyst system. Although the company uses this type of system on its Touareg TDI engine, it would be prohibitively costly for a Tiguan TDI.
Even though these issues were solved, the strong TDI demand from Europe has pushed American availability back.
Ryan suggested that Volkswagen might overcome the issues despite the difficulties when the next-generation Tiguan will be introduced in 2015.
