Electrified 2019 BMW X5 xDrive45e Combines Power and Efficiency

The SUV’s plug-in hybrid can travel up to 50 miles (80 km) without using gasoline.

BMW’s next-generation X5 was introduced in June. The company is now ready to electrify the midsize SUV. The new plug-in hybrid version of the BMW X5 was created to replace the xDrive40e. It is called xDrive45e because it has many improvements over its predecessor. The new hybrid powertrain is a combination of superior power and greater efficiency.

The electrified X5’s heart is an inline six 3.0-liter turbocharged gasoline motor that produces 282 horsepower (210 kilowatts). This engine works together with an electric system with an output of 110 hp (82.2 kW). The new xDrive45e has a combined power output of 389 hp (390 kW) and a huge 443 pound-feet (603 Newton-meters). The old one was able to manage 308 horsepower (230 kW) & 332 lbft (450Nm).

There are good news: The new plug-in hybrid X5 packs a lot more punch and has a much longer electric range. BMW claims it can go up to 50 miles (80 km) with a more powerful lithium-ion battery pack. The company claims that the value is based upon the new WLTP test cycle, but converted back to the NEDC equivalent value. The NEDC-rated X5 xDrive40e, which is now defunct, was only 19 miles (31 km).

The electrified X5 was designed with efficiency in mind. It can go from 0 to 62 mph (100 kph), which is over one second faster than the model it replaces. The top speed in pure electric mode has increased from 75 mph (122 kph), to 87mph (140 km/h). This can be an option if you are looking for efficiency, but a diesel engine is not what you want (or available in your country), BMW claims it will consume 2.1 liters/100 km with equivalent CO 2 emissions at 49 g/km.

The base model comes with two-axle air suspension, electronically controlled dampers and electronic control dampers. More expensive versions get four-wheel steering. This version has a smaller cargo volume than the conventionally-powered model. You have 500 liters with all the seats in place and 1,716 when the rear backrests fold down.

The new BMW X5 xDrive45e will not be available for purchase until next year, despite being revealed today. All specifications refer to the European model. Details about the U.S-spec version will be revealed closer to market launch, which is set for 2020.
