Bring back the big wings.
After a 20-year absence, the Toyota Supra is back for 2020. Toyota teased that the Supra would be returning in 2014 using the FT-1 design, which laid the foundation for the new car. Although you can clearly see the FT-1’s influence on the production version, Toyota diluted the design as it did with most other transitions from concept to manufacturing. What if Toyota had chosen a bolder design? New renderings from October show us how that could look.
The base of the renderings was the Mazda RX Vision. From there, the design was heavily modified and reworked to include a variety of design cues that would appeal to Supra fans. It’s hard to see the Mazda influence. Supra MK5 has a long front overhang and pointed nose. The B-pillar flows into the rear fascia. The headlights look sleek and the lower fascia isn’t too pronounced with gaping intakes or wild splitters. The car’s sleekness is enhanced by its low roof and pinched greenhouse.
There are large intakes on the sides for brake cooling. The rear design is as simple with the large dual exhaust tips located at the corners of the rear bumper. Although the taillights are very simple, the most striking feature is the 90s-era curved wing that spans from fender-to-fender and arches over the rear. This tribute pays homage the fourth-generation Supra model, which helped establish the Supra as a performance icon.
These renderings don’t look like the Supra on sale today. The Supra of today is smaller than the Mk4 on which the renderings were based, which makes the design more compact. These renderings show a Supra with a long, elegant design and the iconic wings.
