VW attempts to conceal it with stickers.
Our spy photographers captured the next-generation Volkswagen Passat while it was still under construction. VW hid the new model by using the body of the existing car, but another batch of spy photos captured it wearing the production body.
Although the next-gen model isn’t much different than the test car spotted a few week ago, VW is doing the typical VW thing and hiding the modifications under stickers. VW applied them to the front and back fascias. This covered up the taillights and headlights, and distorted the front and rear bumpers. This clever trick is one that we are familiar with and know how to spot. The Passat is available only as a wagon. This makes it look more bulky than the model it replaces. It’s especially noticeable around the rear quarter windows, which appear squished. A new spoiler extends down the sides of the wagon, adding to its size. The Passat sedan is no longer offered by VW, and the American Passat nameplate has been removed completely.
Rumours circulate that the next generation VW Passat will grow in size. Spy shots seem to support this belief. Although official measurements will be required to confirm this, it is possible that a larger car will result in more cargo and passenger space. This is especially important as SUVs and crossovers are becoming increasingly popular. VW will likely offer a range of diesel and gas engines for the new Passat. A mild-hybrid powertrain will also be available. VW will likely introduce plug-in hybrid versions of its Passat Alltrack variant. This should offer a higher ride height and extra cladding to intimidate any RAV4 sat next to you on your morning commute.
We are still in the early stages for development of the next-generation Passat. This means that VW won’t unveil the model until next year, 2024. VW has not yet made any official statements. Although we have yet to see the interior of the Passat, it will undergo a complete overhaul that streamlines the inclusions of the most recent in-car technology.
