The Renault Megane RS Trophy R was seven seconds faster
Volkswagen launched the Clubsport special edition earlier this year to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the introduction of the original Grand Touring Injection. The limited-run model is only available with a DCT that sends 296 horses to its front axle. It also includes adaptive shocks and a variable-locking front differential. Sport Auto test driver Christian Gebhardt
These goodies were put to the test when he rode on grippy Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires for a lap around the Nurburgring. He finished the Green Hell lap in 8.66 seconds. This is significantly faster than the Renault Megane RS Trophy R. Christian finished the race in the French hot hatch. 7 minutes 55.12 seconds
How does the Golf GTI Clubsport45’s lap time compare with other similar-sized performance compact cars? The Mercedes-AMG A45 S was significantly faster with Christian lapping the Nurburgring in just 7 minutes, 48.8 seconds. The FWD Golf, which is the range-topping model, was slightly quicker than the GTI TCR-based Golf Mk7, which lapped Nurburgring last season in 8 minutes, 4.92 seconds.
VW has decided not to make a GTI Clubsport S. This means that the Wolfsburg peeps aren’t interested in reclaiming their title as the fastest front-wheel drive production car on the Ring. The Megane RS Trophy R holds the title with a lap of 7:01 and 40.1 seconds, which Laurent Hurgon from Renault Sport achieved in 2019.
Keep in mind that there is a new Civic Type R coming soon. History has shown us that Honda will attempt to regain the title it held for the Lord (FWD) Ring. When the official unveiling is set for 2022, we may hear about a record-breaking attempt.
