Toyota’s Corolla, a long-standing model, has new sheet metal and other impressive tech.
The Toyota Corolla has been a standard in the compact segment for over 50 years. The sedan, now in its 12th generation, is sleeker, more tech-focused and faster than ever. It will be debuting this week at the Los Angeles Auto Show, along with its hybrid counterpart, which can return a staggering 50 MPG.
The new Toyota Corolla takes a lot of cues form its Hatchback sibling. It’s not surprising that the two cars share the same TNGA architecture. The grille is more defined and larger, while the headlights and body lines are slimmer and more curvaceous. This gives it a slimmer profile.
The base Corolla sedan uses a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 139 horsepower (103 megawatts). The 2.0-liter engine produces 169 horsepower (126 kilowatts) in the SE and XSE trims. It is paired with a continuously variable transmission.
The hybrid model gets a 1.8-liter engine and two electric motors. Although the output of the hybrid model is just 121 horsepower (90 kilowatts), Toyota promises that Eco mode will get you 50 miles per gallon. This setup, like all the other Corolla models, is routed via a CVT.
The 2020 Toyota Corolla will go on sale in early 2019 at a price that should be below $20,000. The hybrid model is yet to be announced.
