2020 Cadillac XT6 Three Row CUV Launches with V6 Power, No Super Cruising

Cadillac claims that every seat is the best in the house.

Cadillac was left with its Escalade SUV and its in-betweener XT5 for the past decade as competitors built a fleet of popular and capable three-row crossovers. The sedan-heavy lineup was joined by the compact XT4 in 2018, while the 2020 Cadillac XT6 is the focus. The XT6, which debuts Sunday at the 2019 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), offers three rows of seating in a vehicle that’s not technically a V8-powered pickup trucks under its angular skin. It fills a gap in the Cadillac lineup.

Although it plays an important role in Cadillac’s overall market position, the XT6’s place in the wider market is not easily estimated. The XT6 has 29.5 inches of legroom and 37.2 inch of headroom. It is more spacious than the Acura (28.1/35.6), and AudiQ7 (29.2/35.9). It also offers more third-row headroom than both the Infiniti (30.2/36.5). This is a great start, and it’s further enhanced by the standard power-folding third rows.

The XT6’s absence was a glaring omission in Cadillac’s lineup. However, Cadillac’s exceptional Super Cruise is a major miss amidst an otherwise impressive array tech on the XT6. Cadillac’s new entry includes standard forward collision warning, blind-spot monitor with rear cross traffic alert, and lanes keeping assist. However, Cadillac does not mention Super Cruise in its release. The same as the XT4. Let’s all hope Cadillac sticks to the 2020 plan for technology.

Even if Super Cruise is not there, there is still some interesting tech. Near-field pairing will be available for compatible smartphones, just like the XT4. Instead of having to navigate through the menus or infotainment on their smartphone, owners can touch an icon on their dash to enable Bluetooth connectivity. The 15-watt charger pad will allow for wireless charging and fast access to compatible smartphones. Bose Performance Series speakers boast 14 speakers. An eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto compatibility features an eight-inch touchscreen.

Cadillac says that the XT6 will have a 3.6-liter V6 that produces around 310 horsepower. A nine-speed automatic transmission will transfer that power to an optional twin-clutch all wheel-drive system. It’s not a terrible setup. The five-link independent rear suspension is also excellent, as are the McPherson front struts and adaptive dampers at each corner. If they choose the Sport trim, owners can get 20-inch wheels standard and 21-inch options if they want to buy the XT6.

The XT6 Sport adds a unique exhaust housing and a black grille. Premium Luxury, the other trim Cadillac was mentioned in its initial release, swaps these items for brighter items. No matter what trim you choose, standard LED projector headlights are included. A “performance” LED option can also be purchased.

Cadillac has not yet announced the pricing of the 2020 XT6, however, they have confirmed that it will be available to order from this spring.
