North American debut of BMW X7 at the LA Auto Show

Posh people-movers look large and powerful on the floor of the auto show.

The 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show is the North American debut of BMW’s flagship SUV. The X7 was actually built in the USA at BMW’s huge manufacturing plant in Spartanburg in South Carolina. This year’s LA gala, therefore, isn’t so much an appearance as it is a homecoming. The big Bimmer could be a huge hit with luxury buyers, especially given the high demand for SUVs in America.

It seems like it has all the ingredients for success. North American shoppers will have the option of two models, beginning with the X7xDrive40i. The entry-level X7 is powered by a turbocharged six-cylinder engine that produces 335 horsepower (325 kilowatts) with 330 pound-feet (447 Newton meters) of torque. The SUV can reach 60 mph in just 5.8 seconds. However, the X7 xDrive50i packs a 4.4-liter twin turbo V8. The power output is 458 horsepower (340 kW) with 479 lbft (649 Nm of twist), while the 0-60 times drop to 5.2 seconds.

The X7 delivers power to all four wheels regardless of engine. It is powered by an eight-speed automatic. You can add the 50i to that package with a locking rear diff and separate Dynamic Handling or Off-Road packages, depending on whether you like to play on dirt or pavement. The standard three-row seat can be used to transport six to seven people in comfortable accommodations with the latest technology.

However, such amenities are not cheap. The base 40i starts from $73,900, while the V8-powered 50i starts at $92,600. The Cadillac Escalade continues to be a success, proving that there is a strong American market for SUVs. Buyers can now get a closer look at the X7 in LA.
