Is electrification going to bring the R-Class back?
Mercedes-Benz is discontinuing the R-Class from its lineup, with the exception of China. This was due to dismal sales numbers. Even though the minivan looks appealing enough to car enthusiasts and trivial buyers, the R63 has a handbuilt V8 that produces 503 horsepower (375kilowatts) as well as 465 pound-feet (465 Newton-meters) of torque. Is the R-Class still around? If we believe the latest scoop, it’s not. Car Magazine According to a U.K.-based publication Mercedes will bring back the R-Class, but it will be an all-electric SUV which will sport the Mercedes-AMG-GLR badge. It has been noted that the model is compatible with the Mercedes EQ range. This could indicate that it will come with an EQR nameplate. The Car Magazine report discussed the powertrain that will power the all electric seven-seat SUV. The three motors will be powered by a 105-kilowatt hour power pack. The combined output will be 1,006 horsepower (750 kW) & 996 lbft (1,350Nm) of torque. These are not surprising numbers, but we will remember that the vehicle will sport the AMG badge, so we don’t expect them to happen.
You should always be skeptical about this unconfirmed report. However, you can still consider Mercedes’ electrified offensive in full swing. The extensive electric lineup of the German brand makes it future-proof considering the stricter emission regulations. According to the Car Magazine report, the all-electric Mercedes AMG GLR and EQR are expected to be available by 2025. We will learn more over the coming months and years, and we’ll keep an eye on any new developments.
