Mini would have a difficult time making money with these models.
Models like the Mini Coupe, Roadster and Paceman didn’t sell well and were eventually canceled without being replaced. The BMW-owned marque is being more careful about its products because it doesn’t want the same problems to happen again. A company representative stated that the next-generation lineup of the brand will not include new members except for the electric vehicle already confirmed and pinned for a 2019 launch.
More Mini news:
A production version of the Superleggera concept, or a road-going Rocketman, is not in the plans. Mini is concerned that there won’t be enough demand for either of these models to justify the effort of getting them ready to go on the assembly line.
One insider said TG that a small sports car with the same lines as the Superleggera in 2014 would not make enough profit because the margins would be too low. Let’s not forget that BMW’s parent company has teamed up to Toyota to help keep the Z4 roadster afloat without having to do all of the work for a car which is unlikely to be a bestseller.Mini thinks that the Rocketman concept was originally revealed in 2012 as a concept. Anything smaller than the three-door hatchback model would be too niche, even if it were made into a two-seater.
We are sadder that the stunning Superleggera will not have a production counterpart, at least in the near future. The roadster isn’t a profitable addition to MINI’s range, but as they say, it is business as usual.
