California’s Tesla Model Y Compact SUV Makes a Powerful Debut

You can get one for $47,000 next year. There is also a base model for $39,000 in 2021.

Tesla had the entire electric car market for a while. However, competition is increasing and the new model Y will attempt to take a bigger share of the SUV market. The Model 3-based vehicle might technically be classified as a crossover. This is a big deal because crossovers and SUVs have been figuratively, and literally, killing sedans all over the globe. The ModelX has been Tesla’s only offering in this segment. It’s an extremely fast and elegant people-mover, but it’s also very costly. This is changing now and the Model Y’s significance for Tesla cannot be overstated.

The Model Y is officially out of the covers. At first glance, it looks like a serious contender in the compact crossover market. The Model Y is a seven-passenger people-mover that can travel up to 300 miles, and can reach 60 mph in as little 3.5 seconds depending on which trim level. The Standard Range model will be priced at $39,000, but it won’t go on sale until spring 2021. Starting at $51,000, Performance, Long Range and AWD models will be offered this fall.

The Standard Range is the entry level model, but it won’t be an SUV. It has a 0-60 speed of 5.9 seconds. The range will be shorter, but you can still get 230 miles between charges. The Long Range model offers 300 miles and a slightly quicker 0-60 time (5.5 seconds), while the Performance model provides 280 miles. Prices start at $60,000. The Dual Motor AWD version offers 280 miles, a 0-60 speed of 4.8 seconds and a $51,000 price.

You’ll find the same interior layout as the Model 3 sedan. The minimalist dashboard is matched with the large, center-mount infotainment touch screen that controls almost everything, even the optional Autopilot system. The Model Y has a lot in common with its predecessor, the Model 3. However, the crossover will have optional three-row seating for seven people. The greenhouse details are still being finalized, but anyone hoping to see a miniature of the Model X with its cool gull wing door will be disappointed. The Model Y has a standard set front and rear side-opening doors. Details regarding specific components of the powertrain are also still unclear, but all-wheel drive will become available for Long Range and Performance models. The lineup will also include rear-wheel drive.

The 2021 Tesla Model Y will be available in all trims except Standard Range. The entry model will be available in spring 2021.
