McLaren Artura Launch Delayed Because Of, You Guessed It, Chips

The shortage is a problem that no automaker can avoid.

This fall, the 2022 McLaren Artura was to be launched in the US. The winter solstice is over and there’s no Artura. According to a new Automotive News report, there won’t be one until July. McLaren is facing a chip shortage which has impacted the entire automotive industry. This has delayed the launch of the Artura. Roger Ormisher, McLaren spokesperson, confirmed that the delay was due to the publication.

This is not the first problem that Artura has encountered on its journey to market. McLaren had hoped to launch the supercar by 2020 but delayed it until June. The car’s launch in America was delayed by supply chain problems. A continuing chip shortage will further delay its launch. Automotive News was told by a source that McLaren prioritizes its chip supply for higher margin models because it is facing the same shortage that has affected production at other automakers.

The brand’s 2022 Artura hybrid is its first series production. It packs a powerful technological punch. The electric motor is located in the transmission bell housing and is paired with a twin-turbocharged, 3.0-liter V6. It produces 671 horsepower (605 kilowatts) combined and 593 pound-feet (804 Newton meters) of torque. This combination can propel the supercar up to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 3.0 seconds. The supercar’s top speed is 205 mph (329 km/h). The transmission is also new with a dual-clutch eight-speed speed.

The delay in the Artura’s release is not surprising, although it does hurt. Automakers started experiencing chip shortages in March. Many had to stop production or make vehicles without certain features. Nine months later, automakers still face difficulties with companies such as BMW, Chevy and Alfa Romeo. Before the global supply chain is able to resolve its bottlenecks, automakers will face severe chip shortages until 2022.
