Drag Race: BMW M3 meets Audi RS5 and Mercedes-AMG C63 Black Series

Three standing-start races with the same winner each time.

Nearly every performance vehicle adds a few more ponies with each generation. The BMW M3 had a horsepower output of 444 horsepower (331kilowatts), while the successor has a power output of 510 horsepower (375 kW) and the same package. Although the difference isn’t huge, it’s usually enough to allow the newer model win comfortably in a drag race.

We are saying this because: Carwow‘s latest drag race video on Youtube pits the M3 Competition against an older Mercedes AMG C63 Black Series model year 2011. A Audi RS5 Sportback is added to the mix, unleashing the full potential of its twin-turbo V6. Let’s first compare the numbers before we move on to the race.

Drag Race: BMW M3 meets Audi RS5 and Mercedes-AMG C63 Black Series

Under the hood, the M3 Competition features a 3.0-liter inline-6 engine. It produces 510 horsepower (375 kW). The power is directed to the rear wheels in this instance (there is also an AWD version). It’s a torque converter automatic transmission with launch control and eight-speed speed.

The Audi uses a twin-turbo, 2.9-liter V6 that produces 450 horsepower (331kW), and it is mated with an eight-speed automatic transmission system to send power to all four wheels through the company’s Quattro technology. The Mercedes-AMG C63 Black Series has a 6.2-liter naturally-aspirated V8 that produces 517 horsepower (380 kW). The power is channelled to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox.

It’s time to race after a quick sound comparision. It is surprising to see the same winner for all three standing-start races, but it appears that the newest car in the trio has outperformed the rest at every start. Although we are disappointed with the performance of the C63, it is expected considering the V8 engine and RWD layout.
