The tailgate is blacked out and the wing-shaped M can be seen peeking through.
The Mazda2 was known in Japan as the Demio until 2019. It feels a bit outdated when compared to subcompact hatchbacks. The third generation was released in 2014. The new model was captured by our spy team. To no one’s surprise the Zoom-Zoom supermini will be rebadged Toyota Yaris.
Mazda failed to hide the badges well. We can see the winged “M”, which is visible through the black tape at the tailgate. You can also see the front logo, which further indicates that the next Mazda2 will not be a hybrid Yaris but with a different badge. This makes sense, considering that the automaker already plans to release an “OEM-supplied model based upon Yaris THS (Toyota Hybrid System)” in Europe to comply with increasingly strict emissions regulations.
The hybrid 1.5-liter Yaris is available in some markets with an all-wheel-drive option. However, we don’t expect the Mazda version to have AWD. The high-performance GR Yaris is the same as the Mazdaspeed2 derivative.
Mazda’s smallest model has been updated only a few months back so it will take some time before the next generation is introduced. Final revisions include an efficient 1.5-liter gasoline engine, and the introduction of a 115 horsepower specification along with the 75- and 90% outputs.
The new Mazda2 will have five doors, unlike the GR Yaris which can only be had with a 3-door layout. Although the Toyota model has been used as the base for a crossover we doubt there will be a Mazda2 with a similar layout, since Mazda already has this segment covered.
Last note: Toyota and Suzuki have a similar agreement that allows them to put their badges on the Corolla, RAV4 PHEV, and the Swace wagon as well as the Across SUV.
