Godzilla is being killed in Australia by a new side-impact crash test
The GT-R (R35), even though it has been around for 14 years, is not slowing down. Nissan continues to update its supercar almost every year with numerous special editions that keep Godzilla relevant while it competes against newer performance machines. A new T-Spec brings a variety of visual tweaks and brake air ducts from the all-conquering Nismo.
The T-Spec is a shocking announcement that effectively ends the GT-R’s Australian road. From November 1, 2021, Nissan will no longer be able sell the car. Why? For vehicles manufactured before November 2017, stricter side-impact crash testing regulations (ADR 85), will be in effect. After being introduced in Australia in April 2009, the GT-R fits this bill perfectl
The truth is that few (those with the means to afford it) will miss the R35. Only 19 cars were sold during the first eight months. The R35’s total sales will not exceed 1,000 units by October 31, when the coupe’s 12-year-old Australian existence is over. The Australian magazine Drive pointed out that the original sticker cost 155,800AUD, which is about the same as an M3, and was a third as expensive as a Lamborghini Gallardo.
It starts at 193,800 AUD, and goes up to 378,000 AUD for Nismo. It is no surprise that Nissan has decided not to update the GT-R due to declining sales and an aging platform.
The Australian unique pole side impact design rules (ADR85) have been implemented and the Nissan GT-R is not allowed to be imported into Australia after October 31, 2021. This regulation does not apply for existing models on other markets.
It is worth noting that the GT-R will not be the only Lexus model to go under in Australia. Several Lexus models, including the compact hatchback (yes it’s still available), will also be discontinued at October’s end.
A combined 50 T-Spec/Nismo special editions have been planned for the local market. More details will likely be revealed in the coming weeks. The GT-R (R35), will continue to operate outside of Australia for an unknown amount of time. Rumours suggest that it will continue until 2024, and could receive a mild-hybrid engine along with a Final Edition with more than 700 horsepower.
