It seems that this is not true as the V12 engine will make a comeback in next-generation. S-Class . Talking with GT Spirit At the Guangzhou Auto Show, China Ola Kallenius, chairman of Daimler, shared the good news that the V12 is still alive.
The engine’s details were not revealed by him. It is unclear at this time whether the updated twin-turbo 6.0 liter (M279) unit will be replaced or if a new design could be developed based on a smaller, more efficient V8. However, engineers seem to have discovered a way to make the twelve-cylinder engine more efficient and more friendly to the environment in order to comply with stricter emission regulations.

The fact that the V12 continues to be soldered on is not surprising. Last year, Tobias Moers, AMG boss, told Track that the engine would only be removed from AMG-branded models. The Benz and Maybach vehicles will still feature the large engine. However, it would be more sensible for the posh models with the double M logo to have a V12.

Ola Kallenius also stated GT Spirit, that although the next-generation S-Class will get a V12, the Maybach GLS will not. Daimler’s head honcho suggested that a smaller six-cylinder version of the SUV could be offered. Kallenius said that the company chose to use the AMG-developed V8 because it “fits very well into the GLS Maybach very well.”
