Toyota has revealed information about the redesigned Crown model. This includes the introduction of a hybrid version. Two non-hybrid versions will be offered by Toyota, the Crown Royal Saloon (and the Crown Athlete).
Crown Royal Saloon’s can be equipped with either a 3.0L or 2.5L V6 engine, while Crown Athlete’s have the option of a 2.5L and 3.5L engines. The standard models include a six-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive. An option is four-wheel drive.
The hybrid models are equipped with a 3.5L V6 engine, a rear wheel, and an electronic motor. A first-of-its-kind TFT (thin transistor) LCD Finegraphicmeter that displays analog and digital speedometers and a hybrid system status indicator showing output or energy recovery is also featured.
A new Pre-crash Safety System is also worth mentioning. It uses an eye monitor that determines if the driver has their eyes properly opened and which side they are facing. The car will try to get the attention of a distracted or sleepy driver if it can. Toyota’s GPS stop sign technology , which we previously reported on will also be featured in the vehicle.
Japan is currently selling the Crown Royal and Athlete series, with hybrid versions expected to be available in May. Toyota expects to sell 5,500 Japanese units per month, 800 of which will be hybrids.
